After Lasik Eye Surgery

Lasik corrective eye surgery can often dramatically improve the eye sight of many patients. Approximately 94% of all eye surgery patients discover that they are able to enjoy improved vision almost immediately after Lasik eye surgery. There are patients that have no further need to wear corrective eye glasses or contact lenses after Lasik eye surgery. Some patients even have 20/40 eyesight or better. This corrective surgical procedure is still relatively new and many prospective patients wonder about the long-term effects after Lasik eye surgery.

It is very important to recognize that this is a ‘surgical procedure’ and therefore the outcome you desire cannot be guaranteed. We all heal differently, some of us have remarkable healing powers while others are slow to recover from sickness or surgery. This applies equally to recovery after Lasik Eye Surgery.

The Lasik eye surgery procedure is a relatively quick and straightforward procedure however, there can be risks such as infection and complications:

The risk of complications after Lasik eye surgery and the necessity for further surgery depends on a number of issues. One such issue is the condition of your pre-operative vision; the worse your vision is prior to a Lasik procedure the greater the chances are that:

§  - you will not be completely satisfied with the outcome and

§  - your surgery will result in complications

Examples might be, if you wore reading spectacles before your surgery, you may still need them after Lasik eye surgery and if you previously suffered from a small astigmatism then the results may not be to your satisfaction. Further surgery is not un-common and it is usually covered by the cost of the Lasik treatment.

Your vision at night after Lasik eye surgery

The US Food and Drug Administration have issued warnings that some patients may not be able to drive at night after Lasik eye surgery. The reason for this is that a possible long-term side effect may be, reduced night vision or seeing what are described as ‘halos’ around lighted objects in low light. This side effect can prove to be a serious problem for some people.

The FDA also caution prospective patients to consider that the improved vision immediately after Lasik eye surgery may not be permanent. It is their considered opinion eyesight deteriorates with age and therefore the improvement could be temporary especially for those who previously depended on reading glasses.

After Lasik eye surgery the healing period usually lasts six-months. After that, any problems you experienced with your eye sight should have disappeared or be virtually unnoticeable. The healing of the hinged corneal flap is naturally very important. It was created to allow the laser to reshape the surface of the inner corneal.

Complete healing of the corneal flap may take up to two-years, but the fact that it is not completely healed should not be of concern nor should it cause a vision problem.

After your Lasik eye surgery you will be required to make a minimum of five follow-up visits, the first within 24-hours of the surgery. It is very important that you keep every appointment to ensure that the healing process is monitored and any after care treatment is administered.

Eye drops for the first 2 to 4 weeks after lasik eye surgery will help reduce any discomfort you may feel in your eyes during this initial healing process. A little discomfort (not pain) is perfectly normal as are:

§  - A runny nose and watery eyes

§  - Redness and a small swelling of the eye

§  - Being sensitive to bright light

§  - A feeling of dryness in your eyes

§  - Minor blurred vision

Suggestions to encourage recovery after your Lasik eye surgery might be:

§  - Try to protect your eyes against sunlight (sunglasses) or bright lights and water.

§  - For the first two or three days after Lasik eye surgery, try to get some extra sleep. If this is not possible try at least to rest your eyes whenever you can.

§  - A medication for minor discomfort may be necessary, an OTC medicine that does NOT contain aspirin, like Tylenol or Advil.

§  - For the first two-hours after your procedure you will be asked to wear a mask (an eye shield) and then during your periods of sleep for the next three-or-four days.

§  - Unfortunately, you should avoid all water activities (whirlpools, hot tubs, swimming, etc.) and water sports for the first two weeks.

§  - Avoid scuba diving for at least six weeks.
