Cataract Eye Surgery
As they age many people suffer with cataracts. A cataract is an opaque substance that is
impenetrable to light. Over a period of time it covers the lens of the eye and creates a cloudy look.
The purpose of Cataract eye
surgery is to repair damage to the eye and improve vision. Cataract eye surgery is recommended if there is a reasonable chance of
improvement.
We all expect the quality of our vision to deteriorate with age and consequently many do not
realize they have cataracts but assume their loss of vision is due to age. As a result it is unlikely they will visit an
optician.
Whilst cataracts are viewed as a natural part of aging there are younger patients experiencing
this medical condition.
Cataract eye surgery - causes of cataracts
It is possible for cataracts to appear as the result of eye injuries caused by flying grit and
similar debris puncturing the lens of your eye.
Cataracts may also appear as a consequence of disease, specific medications and
steroids.
Diagnosis
Cataracts are quite easily diagnosed by an optician. Your optician will use special ophthalmic
instruments such as an ophthalmoscope. The test is no more uncomfortable than having an eyesight examination. An ophthalmoscope is merely a
special lighted microscope.
Cataract eye surgery - treatment
Cataract surgery is usually carried out as an outpatient without a stay in hospital however,
there are occasions when the patient is asked to stay over-night.
Cataract eye surgery is considered to be a safe surgical procedure with the patient under local
anesthetic.
The surgical operation involves dismantling the lens of the eye and removing it prior to
inserting an artificial, synthetic lens.
This is achieved by using high-frequency sound
waves to break down the lens into small pieces which are then suctioned out of the eye through a small incision. This synthetic lens
is called “intraocular lens.” The complete procedure is called “intraocular lens implantation.”
The manufactured lens is designed to fit your eye and helps to restore normal vision. Normally a
new prescription for glasses is needed after cataract surgery. Whilst there are other ways to remove the lens and the cataract this procedure is
the most used.
The cataract eye surgery procedure lasts between 15 and 30 minutes. After the operation you are
left to rest for a few hours allowing you to recover before being discharged.
It is usual for antibiotics to be prescribed after the completed procedure. This is to protect
the eye together with eye drops containing steroids for inflammation reduction.
Cataract eye surgery - complications
Eye surgery is well established and cataract eye surgery is a relatively safe
process. The success rate of cataract surgery is over 98%.
Medical complications that may occur are corneal damage, bleeding or damage to other parts of
the eye. Less serious conditions are inflammation and infections, which can easily occur in any surgical procedure.
Cataract prevention
You may be able to prevent the development of cataracts by not smoking and using UVA protection
sunglasses.
Some believe that oxidative stress contributes to the development of cataracts and the risk may
be reduced by taking regular antioxidants.
