Cosmetic Eye Surgery – treatments and procedures
Blepharoplasty
Upper blepharoplasty is a medical procedure to remove excess fat, skin and muscle from the upper eye. After the excess has been removed a younger appearance is usually the outcome and is
suitable for both women and men
A similar procedure is available for people of Asian descent. as well. The procedure is called a “double
fold” operation.
Lower blepharoplasty is used to correct puffy or baggy lower eyelids. by rearranging
the fat with an excisior or laser giving the eye a more relaxed and younger appearance. If there is excess skin to be removed, a minute excision can be made or a laser can be used to resurface the lower skin of
the eyelid. The removal of the fat will not change the position of the eye.
Cosmetic eye surgery can be carried out under local and general anesthesia. A full recovery
should take no more than seven days after which any bruising will disappear.
Browplasty
A ‘forehead lift’ or browplasty is another form of cosmetic eye surgery. An endoscipic brow lift can correct and reshape low or
droopy eyebrows. It also reduces skin folds in the upper eyelids and removes any creases or wrinkles in the forehead. Tiny incisions are
made above the hairline and an endoscope allows the surgeon to see the tissues as they are removed from the forehead.
Pins or other medical accessories may be used to assist in correcting eyebrow cosmetic problems.
The Browplasty procedure lasts about two hours under general anesthetic. The patient is then given time to recover until the
anesthetic wears off and then allowed to go home.
Micro-dermabrasion
This is a simple yet effective cosmetic surgery carried out at day spas and doctors surgeries. The treatment involves vacuuming
dead tissue from the stratum corneum (outer most part of the eye). This condition usually results from sun damaged skin where spots and
blemishes have appeared.
Rhytidectomy
A ‘facelift’ or Rhytidectomy often involves surgery around the eyes. Possibly removing any bags under the eye and tightening the
skin so any wrinkles are removed, giving a more youthful appearance. The tightening of the facial skin around the eyes may result in the
eyes looking less tired.
Droopy eyelids
Cosmetic eye surgery can correct droopy eyelids. This procedure makes the eye look wider and can be performed at the same time as
other corrective cosmetic eye surgery. The actual surgery procedure is specifically designed for each patient. A muscle
conjunction resection procedure is adopted when correcting droopy eyelids. This is considered to be the most effective
method.
Medical insurance carriers cover many of these procedures
Cosmetic eye surgery - eyelid malposition
Another condition requiring cosmetic eye surgery is eyelid malposition. This condition could be caused by earlier cosmetic surgery
or even eye surgery but is easily corrected. The procedure involves tightening the outside corner of the lower eyelids thereby restoring
the normal look and shape of the eyelid. Eyelid retraction may cause a complication known as “round eye look”. This can
sometimes be treated and repaired with skin grafts on the inside the eyelid.
Cosmetic eye surgery - summary
Cosmetic eye surgery is generally a safe procedure when carried out by properly qualified surgeons and doctors. In the main,
complications take the form of infections. When infection occurs the patient should visit
their doctor who may prescribe antibiotics, or in the worst-case scenario further treatment.
If you are seriously considering Cosmetic eye surgery you should
contact your health insurance carrier to find out if your group or individual health plan covers the specific Cosmetic eye surgery
you want. Laser resurfacing and botox are also used to correct cosmetic problems around the eye. Cosmetic eye
surgery has become very popular in the last century but exercise caution and research the procedure and the surgeon you are planning to use
before you make any final decision. Take advice from your doctor.
