Cataract Eye Surgery Risks

Cataract eye surgery is now a very common procedure and the risks are very low.

Less than 2% of people that undergo cataract eye surgery will experience significant complications and these are generally less severe than the results of untreated cataracts which can cause permanent blindness.

The potential complications associated with cataract eye surgery include:

  • Tearing of the lens capsule (the most common complication)
  • An eye infection
  • Bleeding within the eye
  • Swelling and redness of the eye
  • Damage to the cornea
  • Part of the cataract dropping into the eye

Cataract eye surgery complication can usually be successfully treated. However, in extremely rare cases damage may be irreparable leading to loss of sight.
